Halloween Shopping Guide Part 3: Practical Tidbits from Wal-Mart, Target and Dollar Stores

Hello friends!

Welcome to week 3 of my Halloween shopping series.

While I usually get most of my more unique and special items from places like Homesense, there are some practical Halloween decorating items you can get at cheaper stores.

Glittery pumpkins from Wal-Mart

I don't typically buy much of my main decor from these shops, but they are good for some of the basic Halloween decorating items.

Instead of buying the expensive witch's hats from the decorating stores, I buy the dollar store versions and then spice them up with some sparkly spiders from Michael's.

The dollar store is excellent for little Halloween crafts for kids, and kids at heart.  I think my mum thought it was pretty funny when my boyfriend and I were sat at the dining room table painting Frankenstein and this little ghosty on a Saturday night.  Poor Frank's head is chipping!

Orange and purple Halloween lights are one of my favourite things about decorating for Halloween.  I always get mine for about a dollar a set at the dollar store, and buy a few packs so I can put them allover.

Sometimes you'll find some treasure on clearance in the days following Halloween.  I've had this little lantern from Target for years.

And these sweet little Halloween stuffs were gifts from my boyfriend this year.  Dollar store!

Dollar stores and superstores like Wal-Mart and Target can have a few cutesy things for Halloween decorating.  Usually there is nothing very unique, or if you enjoy a bit of a gothic decorating style, nothing high quality enough to leave out year round.  Little tidbits can be found however!  I think the basics like cobwebs, lights, and extra kitschy garlands are best bought on the cheap, and you usually can't find those things at higher end stores anyway.

I hope you enjoyed this instalment of my Halloween Shopping series.  Next week will be my final instalment and will be about costumes and clothing for the modern witch.

After that two blog parties will take us through to the end of October.  My my Autumn is flying by!

Catch you later lovely spooky folks!

Your ghostly hostess,

Halloween Shopping Guide Part 2: CANDLES! Bath and Body Works, Yankee Candle and others...

Hello friends,

Welcome to part 2 of my Halloween shopping guide.

All the places this little witchy goes to prepare for her favourite time of year!

Now one of my absolute favourite things about fall and winter is candles.  It is so cozy and relaxing to be tucked up in bed watching a Halloween film with a deliciously scented candle burning.

My absolute favourite candle company is Bath and Body Works and I always go a little crazy at this time of year buying things.

These candles have three wicks so they always melt evenly right to the sides of the jar.  They're also the strongest smelling candles I've ever encountered, nothing worse than buying an expensive candle that you can't even smell!

Warm caramel cider is a repackage of last year's Cider Lane.  It smells just like that caramel dip for apples you can buy at the grocery store, mixed with a touch of warm cinnamon.

Marshmallow fireside smells of vanilla, s'mores, and a hint of woodsy smoke from the fire you're roasting them on!

Pumpkin cupcake is exactly what it sounds like, only I'd imagine it's just a pinch of cinnamon they've put in with the buttercream cupcake rather than an actual pure pumpkin scent.

Leaves is my very favourite scent from BBW and they bring it out every year.  It smells of sweet apples, rich cinnamon and sugar, and absolutely perfect autumnal sugary and spiciness.  I often burn this on Thanksgiving (the Canadian one is in October) as the scent of this mixing with the roasting turkey is amazing.

Pumpkin apple is a newer scent that has only been released the last couple of years.  It is a lot less cinnamon than other scents, genuine pumpkin puree mixed with fresh macintosh apples!

Wallflowers plug into your walls and spread the smell throughout the room whenever you want it.  They come in so many cute shapes and you can buy bulbs of pretty much every candle scent they make seasonally

Yankee Candle is not really a close second at all, though I do enjoy their creativity and the lines they come out with seasonally.  I rarely buy these candles as I don't find they have as much scent throw as BBW candles.  They don't burn right to the sides of the jars as well, and are much more expensive than BBW.  If you shop at the right time, you can get Bath and Body Works candles for 2 for 20 dollars.  The medium Yankee jars are about 23 dollars for the same size, each, and their deals are just not usually as good.

However, if I do buy Yankee I find them at places like Homesense where they're deeply discounted.
I got this yummy Candy Corn candle last year at Halloween.

My favourite Yankee scent is spiced pumpkin, I burned the candle when I first saw Practical Magic and to this day it reminds me of that film.

Honourable Mentions

You can buy all sorts of random candle brands from stores like Homesense, like these two I picked up in the summer.  I don't recommend Wal-Marts brands, they just don't tend to have much scent throw.  Target makes a good line for their store, and also carries a few good lines including Yankee.

Country Home Candle is a Canadian company that makes absolutely amazing, rustic, gorgeous candles.  I don't have any on hand right now as I've burned through them all.

Scentsy is a good option for those who don't like the flame aspect of candle burning, though I find cleaning out the wax trays incredibly annoying and find it much easier to just light a candle.

Etsy is filed with candle vendors that sell things like scented oils, tarts, jar candles, and candles that look and smell just like real baked goods.  There are literally hundreds of them, just got to look!

And finally, craft sales usually have a few tables of candle vendors who make homemade candles, usually with natural materials like soy that burn cleanly.  I love craft shows and will definitely share some of my finds once the season begins.

As you can see I adore different home scents, candles, tarts, oils, everything!  This post is only just a tiny taste of the companies and products I've ventured into, we could be here for days talking about this.

If anyone's interesting I may do a similar post around Christmas time for holiday and winter scents and candles.

In other news…

I will be participating in A Fanciful Twist's upcoming Halloween Party.  However, I am going to see Miss Stevie Nicks on the 26th and will be leaving for Ottawa on the 25th.  I will put up my post on the morning of the 25th and will make my visits throughout the week before Halloween.  I hope that is alright with everyone participating!

Halloween Shopping Guide Part 1: Homegoods

Dear friends,

I have decided to start my first ever series on my blog!

This series will take us several weeks and each week I will discuss one of my favourite shops to purchase Halloween items from.

I apologize to overseas readers, but this series will focus on US/Canadian stores because that is what is available to me.  It may be interesting for others to see what we get here though!

As you all know I LOOOOOVE Halloween and when the shops start getting their goods out I rejoice!

This week I will be talking about Homegoods, also known as Homesense in Canada and the UK.

The following pictures are just a few of the items I have collected from Homesense over the past few years.  It has the absolute best things in my opinion.  They're not too expensive, and they are high quality just like any other decor item.  They are not made cheaply just because they are a holiday specific product.

Haunt Sign.

If you enjoy this type of decor all year round it is the perfect place to get things.

Headless horseman figurine.

Witch doll.

I especially love the variety of art dolls the store carries.  Though they are mass-produced, they have a similar look to something created by an artist.

Ouija sign.

Wooden witch doll.

Pumpkin candles.

If you are looking for inexpensive high quality candles, this is the place to go!  Yankee candles are always available for about a third of their regular retail price.  Not to mention tons of other wonderful and unique candle brands.

Skeleton candelabra and gypsy lanterns.

Haunted house and cat and moon candle stand.

My little Jack O'Lantern!

Halloween sign.

Another little witchy.

As you can see I am obsessed with Homesense.  Obviously this is a store that is different at every location, so this is a sampling of things that have been available in the past few years.

This post has not been sponsored, I truly just love this company.   It is also amazing around Christmas for those who love that holiday season as well ;)

I will be continuing my series with a few other stores in the next few weeks including Bath and Body Works, Target, Walmart, the Dollar Store and some witch clothing stores.

Blessings and hope you enjoyed the first post in my shopping guide,

Pack Up Your Broomsticks and Pull On Your Striped Stockings!

Hello friends,

Welcome Autumn, welcome September, welcome ….

The season for spooks and spirits.

This little witch's heart is gleaming, glowing, plotting, planning.

Big things happen every October, I feel it in my bones.

The excitement builds for pumpkin and cinnamon spice scented candles.

Oh I hear Something Wicked This Way Comes, a carnival a carnival!

All my witches are preparing, gathering, brewing, cackling!

A Halloween banner has even appeared over my bed.  I see this is the location of all the pumpkin festivities under the harvest moon ;)

Olga Alva, Broomhilda and Agatha have all gathered around my altar and knitting basket, looking to get some witching tips I'd assume.  Guess that means I'm the Supreme! :P

I have been preparing by hunkering down, snuggling up, and watching oodles of Once Upon A Time.  I just love this show!  Snow White is my absolute favourite!  No spoilers please, I've only just started season two.

Blessings and love,
